What Makes a Good Movie?

Welcome to our website! We have endeavored to determine which characteristics make a good movie by manipulating and analyzing data from over 1,500 movies. As movie lovers ourselves, we wanted to figure out what kinds of movies other moviegoers enjoyed the most. We figured this information would be helpful for both the movie industry and movie watchers. Movie makers would likely be interested in knowing which movie characteristics are most popular with audiences, so they can make the most successful—and profitable–movies. On the other hand, movie lovers may be interested in knowing which types of movies are most popular with other viewers—either so they can more easily seek out more popular movies or just for the general knowledge! We have set out to answer the following questions in our quest for what makes a good movie:

• Of the most popular movies in our data set, which actors and actresses star in the most of them? Which directors have made most of them?
• Of the actors, actresses, and directors in our data set, which have made the most movies? Is the number of movies made by those involved with a movie (i.e. the amount of experience) correlated to the popularity of that movie?
• Which movie genres are most popular?
• Is there a correlation between the length of the movie and its popularity? Or with a movie's popularity and whether it has won any awards?
• Have movies tended to get longer or shorter over time? Does the length of a movie have any effect on its popularity?
• Today, is there any correlation between a movie’s release date and its popularity? Are modern movies more popular today, or do older movies tend to be more popular?
